Taking time to do it right from the start is the key. To prevent cracking and crumbling you’ll need to pre-drill holes for your screws, and you can start by taping down a strip of blue tape before drilling holes. I'm not a plaster pro, but I have dealt with what you are talking about. and if not in a stud, can litterally pop right out. so if it has tension, it can crack all the way across. I hung up 8 x 8 shelves on metal stanchions years ago and severely. Ive never used toggle bolts, drywall anchors, or a stud finder (well, I tried the stud finder - it finds lath everywhere, so its of very little use). Remember also that in houses built then, they often didnt standardize distance between studs like modern homes try to. I live in an old house with plaster & lath walls and I just drive a screw into the wall where I want to hang something. At very least pre-drill where the mounting bolts are going so the supports wont be putting pressure on the plaster. and if you dont want the look of plates you can use joint compound over it (if its slightly thinner than the plaster removed) and it will look the same after painting.ģ. 14 Tile, stucco outside, plaster inside : Single floor, lath. That way if there is flex it wont be on the plaster. I might even suggest cutting away a portion of the plaster and mounting plates (either wood, metal or even just drywall if you are still able to anchor to studs)to the area you are going to be mounting. Cant do it the same as drywall where spreaders and such can work)Ģ. In order to screw in your mounting hardware, you will need to locate the studs using a stud finder. You can do it yourself if you have the right tools. And the process is not as difficult as it may seem. Top Tip: Use a drill with variable speed so that you can screw the drywall screw in. Hold the picture hook firmly in place then fasten the screw to the wall using a drill with the right size drill bit for the drywall screw. The key to hanging a heavy mirror on lath and plaster is choosing the right hardware. Mark the wall where you would like the picture hook to be fixed. Note that there will be some small damage to the plaster, but it will be easily hidden by the curtaon rods and curtains. It is possible to mount a TV on lath and plaster. Step 2: Drill the Picture Hook Into the Plaster Wall. Make sure you find the studs (some studfinders can do a deep scan, but with wood lathe I'm not sure how easy that will be. Drill through the plaster and into the lathe with a drill bit that is smaller than the screws that will hold the rods. and if it is significant weight, it can put tension across the whole wall if it has that. ![]() ![]() But I've lived in a few places back in the day of similar dating.
